return from Portugal adventure
Lee
Burley and Ken Bonser have returned from their trip to Portugal where they
represented the Club, playing in the Volvo Matchplay competition.
Lee
told us: "We had to play 5 rounds to get to the regional final. We started with
an away match at Wellingborough, where we had a good win, and our remaining 4
knockout rounds were played at home. The regional final was played ay Frilford
Heath golf club in Oxfordshire. There were 20 pairs, and the top 3 qualified
for the Grand Final at the Vale Do Lobo Resort in the Algarve, Portugal, the
17th year it had been held there.”
He
added: "Ken and I won the regional final with 42 points betterball stableford,
played in a howling gale. We were 5 under gross for the closing 10 holes, which
eventually secured our place on the plane to Portugal, by 2 clear points on the
rest of the field.”
Lee
and Ken had some support from the Club as he explained:
"We
flew out on the 15th of January, accompanied by two caddies, Andy Walker and
Mark Peacock, who also doubled as life coaches, nutritionists, and refreshment
carriers! We had to make sure Market Harborough had the best support out there
and we sure made our mark out there with everyone.”
Lee
did manage to bring at a prize back. "The competition was played over 4 rounds,
with all 4 rounds to count, again betterball stableford, over two different
courses, The Royal, and The ocean course.
There were various prizes over the
week, and I managed to win the nearest the pin on the 9th hole of the Royal
course on day 1, a 187yd hole.
